Sherwood hires former player Gelfand as new boys hoops coach

ALBANY — Sherwood announced the hiring of Bryan Gelfand on Wednesday as its new varsity boys basketball coach.

Gelfand is a 1996 graduate of SCA who was captain of the team that made it to the GISA AAA State Final Four that year. He went on to receive SCA’s first men’s college basketball scholarship when he signed with Division II Mississippi College. Two years later, he transferred to Division I University of Central Florida in Orlando, where he finished his career. Despite turning down offers to play overseas professionally after college, he went on to work as an instructor at college summer camps, 5-Star Camps and the Philadelphia 76ers summer camps.

Gelfand, who becomes Sherwood’s third new boys head coach in as many seasons, recently returned to Albany with his family after work stints in Florida and Ohio, to serve as the new finance director at Sunbelt Ford in Albany — and now he can add head boys basketball coach at Sherwood to that list.

“I am excited to be back in Albany and back at SCA. I hold this school close to my heart. SCA is a big part of my life. It was on the upper campus where I was first introduced to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” he said. “Now I want to give back to a place that has meant so much to me.

“It has not just been my dream to coach kids, which I have been doing for a few years now, but it has been my dream to coach at my alma mater. I am here to give these young men stability and to help them grow as Christian men and as basketball players. Nothing would bring me greater joy than to help bring kids to Christ and see many sign a basketball scholarship to play in college.”
