Man pistol-whipped at park

ALBANY — An East Albany man was pistol whipped Wednesday at Joe Malone Park on Cedar Avenue.

Malik Malone told officers of the Albany Police Department that he was playing basketball at the park around 8 p.m. when his cell phone was taken by three men he didn’t know. When he asked them to return the phone, they told him he would have to fight them for it, Malone said.

According to Malone’s statement, he then returned home and returned to the park with his father, General Malone, who demanded the phone be given back. One of the suspects then pulled a handgun, the father told police, and tried three times to shoot him with it. When the gun continued to malfunction, the suspect then struck the father in the rear of his head with the gun and fled on foot with his two friends, officials say.

The case has been turned over to the gang unit of the APD for investigation, Banks said.
