Berry Glenn, Jr.
ALBANY - Berry Glenn, Jr. was born on September 13, 1928 in Saluda County, South Carolina to Berry Glenn, Sr., and Bernice Campbell Glenn. Berry was the first “boy” born to Berry and Bernice after birthing five daughters. Bernice Glenn ran through the streets of Saluda announcing, “I got my boy!” Three other siblings were born after the “boy,” totaling nine children.
Berry was educated in the public schools of Saluda County and earned an athletic scholarship from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. In his third year of college, he was called to serve in the United States Army in the Korean War. Berry married the love of his life in 1953, the late Gussie Hill Glenn who preceded him in death in 2009. Together they raised nine children and loved them unconditionally.
The whole of Berry’s life has been dedicated to taking care of his family and helping others in times of need. Everyone who knew him knows that he epitomized generosity. Berry was a dutiful pillar and giver in his community. He was a faithful member of Arcadia Baptist Church where he served on the Trustee Board. Civic minded as well, Berry always donated his time to voter registration. Additionally, he was a member of Post 512 of the American Legion, a member of the Country Club Estates Civic Club, LLC; He also received numerous awards from the Department of Veteran Affairs for his commitment and service. He retired from the Marine Corps Logistic Base after 35 years as a heavy-duty mechanic.
Berry will be missed by his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great- great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews. All who knew and loved him will truly miss his generosity and compassion for others.
Homegoing Services for Mr. Berry Glenn, Jr. will be held at Arcadia Baptist Church (1214 North Jackson Street in Albany, Georgia) on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 10:00am. A visitation will be held on Wednesday December 4, 2013 from 6-8pm at Meadows Funeral Home located at 315 South Madison Street in Albany, GA. 31707. The family of Berry Glenn, Jr. would like to thank everyone for their prayers and thoughts during his illness.
