TIFTON — The Westover girls basketball team stayed undefeated Friday with a thrilling double-overtime victory against Tift County.
The Lady Patriots missed out on chances to win the game at the end of regulation and in the first OT, but Achanti Layfield came up big in the second OT to lead Westover to a 51-44 win.
Westover trailed Tift County by four points with just 50 seconds remaining in regulation, but the Lady Patriots mounted a comeback and even had a chance to win the game in the final seconds but came up short on a game-winner.
The Lady Patriots missed key free throws in the first overtime that would have put it away, but then Layfield, who led Westover with 20 points, went 6-for-6 from the line in the second overtime to ice the game.
AuBreAna Moore added 10 points for the Lady Patriots, who are now 6-0 overall and play again at home today against Terrell County.
RANDOLPH-CLAY SWEEPS EUFAULA: Both Randolph-Clay basketball teams stayed undefeated Friday with a pair of wins against Eufaula (Ala.).
The Randolph-Clay girls won, 63-47, behind big games from Brandi Buie and Kobi Thornton, who scored 27 and 21 points, respectively, as the Lady Red Devils improved to 3-0.
The Randolph-Clay boys won a thriller in overtime, 80-79, as Gary McCrae scored a game-high 24 points, and Cornelius Bennett added 17 points. The Red Devils are now 3-0 overall.
Both Randolph-Clay teams play huge region games Tuesday against rival Seminole County as both teams look for an early upper-hand in the Region 1-A races.
WORTH COUNTY BOYS 53, AMERICUS-SUMTER 51: Anfernee McLemore had a triple-double Friday to lead the Rams to a Region 1-AAAA victory. McLemore finished with 19 points, 13 rebounds and 11 blocks for Worth, which is now 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the region.
Jamier Crumbly (12 points), D.J. Harris (11 points) and Kyron Davis (10 points) all scored in double figures for Americus-Sumter, which fell short in a back-and-forth game.
Worth plays again today at home against Fitzgerald.
CALHOUN COUNTY BOYS 78, MITCHELL COUNTY 40: The Cougars cruised to a 38-point Region 1-A victory and improved to a perfect 4-0 overall record and a 2-0 record in the region.
Quenten Miller paced Calhoun with 19 points, while DaJohn Williams and Sherrod Williams both scored 11 points for the Cougars, who jumped out to a 31-15 lead at halftime and then poured it on in the second half.
Mitchell was led by Disarrius Robinson’s 11 points.
Calhoun County will try to stay undefeated as it travels tonight for a game at Baker County.
BYNE CHRISTIAN GIRLS 34, GRACE CHRISTIAN 30 (OT): Megan Ebel scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Byne Christian girls to their second straight win.
Heather Horne also added 14 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Byne, which improved to 2-4 overall and plays again Tuesday at Highland Christian in Valdosta.
