Here are some things going on in metro Albany this week that you need to know about.
DOUGHERTY COUNTY COMMISSION: The commission conducts a work session at 10 a.m. in room 120 of the Government Center, 222 Pine Ave. On the agenda are reports on current tax collections and deliquent taxes, the Sheriff’s Office’s youth programs and the Albany-Dougherty EDC’s promotional video, and discussion of a rezoning and special approval request from New Communities that would allow the property at 801 Old Pretoria Road to have an indoor/outdoor special event center.
GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS PANEL: The Dougherty County Commission’s Government Affairs Committee will meet immediately after the commission’s 10 a.m. work session concludes. The meeting will be in the fifth-floor conference room of the Government Center, 222 Pine Ave.
SUPERINTENDENT LISTENING SESSION: The Dougherty County School Board will listen to members of the public in regard to the search for a new superintendent for the Dougherty School System. The session is set for 5 p.m.-6 p.m. at the School Administration Building, 200 Pine Ave.
LEE SCHOOL BOARD: The board meets at 5:30 p.m. at the Lee County School Board Office, 126 Starksville Ave. North. Among the agenda items are a presentation by “Trojans Against Tobacco Youth Coalition” and setting the board meeting calendar for 2014. This is the final regularly scheduled meeting for 2013.
DOUGHERTY SCHOOL BOARD: The Dougherty County School Board has a briefing at 6 p.m. and then meets at 7 p.m. at the School Administration Building, 200 Pine Ave. Expected to be discussed is a Finance Committee recommendation to cut one of the school system employees’ furlough days. This is the School Board’s final scheduled meeting for 2013.
MAKING MATH SENSE: “How to Make Sense of Math” for Dougherty County parents of public school students is at 6 p.m. in the gym at New Birth Fellowship Church, 2106 Radium Springs Road. The program hosted by the system’s Title I office is designed to help parents learn strategies for working with their children on math assignments.
LIGHTS OF LOVE: The annual ceremonial lighting of the Lights of Love Christmas tree is at 7 p.m. at Phoee Putney Memorial Hospital. Cancer survivor Patsy Martin will be the tree lighter, with special music by Dr. Leroy Bynum of Albany State University.
‘YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN’ AUDITIONS: If you have a nibble from the acting bug, the final two sessions of auditions for Lee County High School’s upcoming stage production of Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein” are at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Clay Auditorium at the high school.
LEE COUNTY COMMISSION: The board meets at 5 p.m. in a special session to discuss special-purpose local-option sales tax projects. At its regular 6 p.m. meeting, the commission is expected to discuss employee medical health care plans. The commission meets at the Tharp Center, 102 Starksville Ave. North. This is the last scheduled meeting of the board for 2013.
DCSS ELEMENTARY ART: The Albany Area Arts Council hosts a 3 p.m.-5 p.m. reception for students (and their parents) who are exhibiting in the annual Dougherty County School System Elementary Art Show on exhibit through New Year’s Eve at the Arts Council, 215 N. Front St. The show includes artwork created by 158 students at 13 elementary schools.
DARTON STATE COMMENCEMENT: Gov. Nathan Deal is scheduled to be the speaker at Darton State College’s fall commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. in Darton’s Cavalier Arena.
FLINT — CHRISTMAS PAST: Walter Flint, radio personality and minister, will present “Christmas Past — An Evening With Walter Flint” at 6 p.m. at Thronateeska Heritage Center, 100 Roosevelt Ave. Preceding Flint’s presentation will be a showing of “Season of Light” at the center’s Wetherbee Planetarium, and visitors can also take in the Science Museum’s Santas Around the World exhibit. Admission is $3.50 plus tax per person.
LETTERS TO SANTA: This is deadline for turning in gifts for children who are staying at The Bridge and Liberty House. The Make A Wish Come True program is being conducted by the Albany Recreation and Parks Office, and the gifts, which do not have to be wrapped, should be delivered to the office by today. ALBANY STATE COMMENCEMENT: Albany State University’s fall commencement ceremony is set for 9:45 a.m. at the Albany Civic Center. The speaker had not been announced Friday.
