ALBANY — The Albany Police Department issued a lookout Tuesday for a lone gunman who robbed the Haley Food Mart, 715 S. Slappey Blvd., around 9:30 a.m.
Police officials initially believed the gunman to be in the Gordon and Lincoln avenues area, officials said, and focused their search in that vicinity.
Store manager Sonny Patel said the robber came in the back of the store and pointed a handgun at his wife, Pragnaben, who was behind the counter, and demanded money from the register.
While the gunman was placing the money into his pocket, Patel said, a customer came into the store who at first didn’t realize the store was being robbed. The gunman pointed the gun at the customer before leaving with the money, Patel said.
No one was injured during the robbery, Patel said, though his wife was so shaken by the experience she required medical attention. Patel said the store is robbed “often” during the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The gunman was described as a black male, about about 5 foot 9 and weighing about 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing a mask, a green hoodie with white stripes on the sleeves and green tennis shoes with white bottoms. Police said he could have still been wearing a mask.
Police said he was carrying an unknown make of firearm. Officials warned that the suspect should be considered dangerous and, if spotted, should not be approached. Instead call 911 or the APD at (229) 431-2100.
