NEWTON — The Herald No. 4 Pelham girls basketball team ran out to a 49-3 first-half lead and cruised on Tuesday to a 78-14 win against Baker County.
The Lady Hornets (3-0) led 25-0 at the end of the first quarter and were led by Quadranique Franklin, who finished with a game-high 16 points. McKenzie Smith scored 10 points, Mahogany Brown added nine points and Harmony Smith and Aaliyah Williams each had eight points for Pelham.
Herald Super 6er Briunna Freeman saw limited playing time due to the blowout and finished with seven points.
Pelham plays again Friday at home against Cairo.
PELHAM BOYS 91, BAKER 34: Pelham outscored Baker 44-13 in the second half to wrap up a rout of the Bears and improve to 2-1 overall.
Darius Spence and Duntrez Moore scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, to lead Pelham, which plays again Friday at home against Cairo.
LADY TORNADOES SURVIVE UPSET BID: Monroe point guard Jomekia Morine scored a game-high 22 points to help the Herald No. 1 Lady Tornadoes come back from a fourth-quarter deficit and beat Americus-Sumter, 62-59.
Americus took a 47-40 lead into the fourth quarter, but Monroe rallied late to improve to 8-0 and stay undefeated.
Herald Super 6er Key Key Price added 14 points for the Lady Tornadoes, while Fantaza Stroud scored 12 points.
Timia Swanson scored 21 points to lead the Lady Panthers.
Monroe plays again Friday and Saturday in the Washington County Christmas Tournament with a 5:30 p.m. game Friday against Rockville and a 7 p.m. game Saturday against Washington County.
CALHOUN COUNTY BOYS 72, EARLY COUNTY 55: The Cougars continued their red-hot start to the season with a strong second half against Early County to pull away Tuesday.
Calhoun County is now a perfect 8-0 and plays again Friday at home against Lanier County.
Sherrod Williams led the Cougars with 23 points, DaJohn Williams added 20 points and Quenton Taylor finished with 19 points.
