TIFTON — Led by lead singer Austin Brown, formerly of Tifton, the country a Capella group Home Free has won the Season 4 competition of NBC’s “The Sing-Off.”
Brown as his co-horts were chosen Monday night during a two-hour finale of the show, which features the top a Capella groups in the country. The group is based in Minneapolis, Minn.
Home Free earned the top prize of $100,000 and a Sony Music recording deal.
The group was chosen as the champs by judges Ben Folds of The Ben Folds Five, Shaun Stockman of Boyz II Men and singer Jewel.
A large group of Home Free fans gathered in a Tifton restaurant Monday evening to watch the finale. Because the show was taped, Brown was in Tifton Monday and surprised those attending the viewing party with a visit just minutes after the winner was announced.
The quintet was started 13 years ago by brothers Adam and Chris Rupp. Newer members include Rob Lundquist, Tim Foust and Brown.
Throughout the competition, the group used their own arrangement of country songs including “Ring of Fire,” “Colder Weather,” and “I Want Crazy.”
Home Free and the other groups competing for the top prize soon will begin a nationwide tour.
