ALBANY — After sitting vacant for nearly five years, the former Circuit City location in northwest Albany will soon have a new tenant, Ashley Furniture Homestores.

The national furniture retailer began renovations this week on the 29,000 square foot building located next to Michael’s craft store at 1221 N. Westover Blvd.

Once completed the furniture store will feature roughly 25,000 square feet of showroom space, divided into eleven different sections to showcase various bedroom, living room, dining room, office and children’s furniture.

The Albany store is owned by Turner Furniture Holding Corp, headquartered in Thomasville. Ashley Furniture Homestores exclusively carries Ashley Furniture, which in 2007 passed Walmart as the No. 1 retailer of furniture and bedding in the United States.

“Ashley pretty much dominates the industry right now,” said Turner Furniture Holding Corp President Steve Gracik. “We offer outstanding quality at a great price point. It’s the best value for the money.”

Gracik went on to say that the company has been working on opening the Albany location for the past few months and hopes to have the store open to the public sometime this spring.

“We hope to open by mid to late March,” Gracik said. “That’s what we’re hoping for now that we’ve started construction. It’s going to be a beautiful store.”

Turner Furniture Holding Corp executives chose Albany, Gracik said, for a variety of factors, including the store’s close proximity to the company’s Thomasville warehouse.

“The location is in a great location,” said Gracik. “It’ll be a great addition to Albany and our organization. It’s close to our home and the community is just perfect. We’re just really excited about the new store. We can’t wait to get it open.”

Once open the Albany store will employ roughly 20 to 25 people. Gracik also said the location will carry Ashley Furniture and home decor, including rugs and mattresses.

“We’ll carry a full line of Ashley Furniture and a full line of a accessories,” said Gracik.

The Albany location will be the 12th Ashley Furniture Homestores owned by Turner Furniture Holding Corp., whose owners Scott and Russell Turner opened their first Ashley Furniture Homestores in Tallahassee, Fla in 2002.

The company opened a second location in Mobile, Ala., in 2003 and since then, has opened multiple Ashley Furniture Homestores in North Carolina and Georgia as well.

Ashley Furniture was founded as a sales organization in 1945 with branches in Chicago, Ill and Goshen, Indiana. The company merged with Arcadia Furniture in 1976 to form Ashley Furniture Industries Inc.

The first locally owned and operated Ashley Furniture Homestore opened in Anchorage, Alaska in 1987 and there are now over 300 individual locations throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America and Japan.
