‘Field of Flags’ parcel under contract

ALBANY, Ga. — Officials at the Albany Mall confirmed to the Albany Herald Friday that they were under contract for an open piece of land on Westover Boulevard, but would not say who was interested in buying the parcel used annually for the “Field of Flags” tribute for 9/11.
Albany Mall spokesperson Debra Rowe said that the piece of grassy land between Dillards and Outback Steakhouse was under contract for purchase.
One name that has surfaced in connection to the plot is outdoor retailer Gander Mountain, which recently opened a store in Valdosta and several others in Alabama. That was not confirmed by Aronov, the mall’s parent company, or by Gander Mountain spokesperson Jess Myers.
“As you’re aware, we’re in the midst of a pretty big expansion right now and with stores opening up in Valdosta, Tuscaloosa and other locations in Alabama, that area has been one we’ve been interested in,” Myers said. “But usually we don’t comment on these types of developments until after we’ve closed on the property.”
