Merry Acres wins 26th MathCounts

ALBANY, Ga. — Merry Acres Middle School won the 26th Annual Darton State College MATHCOUNTS competition held this past weekend with four area middle schools participating.

Schools sending sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade teams to participate in the tournament included Merry Acres, Robert A. Cross Middle Magnet School, Sherwood Christian Academy and Lee County Middle School.

The event’s individual high scorer was Saloni Patel from Merry Acres, while the countdown winner was Emma Keaton from Lee Middle. Both received trophies.

Each member of the winning Merry Acres team — which included Jarret Smith, Mary Rachel Bonner, John Hatcher, and Byron Williams — was presented a TI-84 Plus graphing calculator and individual trophies. A plaque was also presented to the team’s coach, Tracy Stolze.

The second-place team, Sherwood Christian Academy, received trophies for each team member and a plaque for the coach, Matthew Sweet. Lee County Middle placed third.

Merry Acres Middle School will compete in the State MATHCOUNTS competition in Atlanta next month.

The top three high scorers not included on the winning team will also participate in the state competition. Those students are Merry Acres’ Patel, Lee County’s Keaton and Dylan Holland from Merry Acres.

During the four-hour event, teams and individuals competed for top honors and awards. The competition began at 9 a.m. with a fast-paced Sprint Round.

During the initial round, students had 40 minutes to complete 30 problems. Participants then moved to the Target Round, which involved some of the most difficult problems of the competition. Participants were given 32 minutes to complete eight questions. School teams also competed during a Team Round.

Results from these first three rounds determined participants for the Countdown Round.

The annual tournament is part of a national tournament sponsored by the Society of Professional Engineers. The Darton College Foundation was the local sponsor, along with the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers.

This is a prime example that there is a good education to be had in DCSS. Yes, the school system has it's problems at the adminstrative level, but there are many good teachers in our local school system. The key is that students & parents have to be invested in their child's education. There are too many people here who don't understand that concept. They want to blame the teachers & throw more money at the school system. What they need to do is take advantage of what is already offered - it's really a simple concept. A great big congratulations to MAMS Mathcounts team!!
