AT&T turns on Albany 4G LTE service

ALBANY, Ga. — Telecommunications giant AT&T has flipped the switch on its 4G LTE network in Albany, company officials say.

The change means that AT&T customers in Albany with advanced smartphones and tablets can now download data, music and movies on a much faster network.

“We continue to see demand for mobile Internet skyrocket, and our 4G LTE network in Albany responds to what customers want from their mobile experience — more, faster, on the best devices,” Courtney Brinson, the regional director of AT&T Georgia external affairs, said in a news release Tuesday.

Getting beyond all of the technical jargon, 4G LTE service is basically the next evolution in cellular network technology. The "4G" stands for the fourth generation of cellular development, while LTE, according to technology blog techradar.com, stands for Long-Term Evolution, which is a growing trend to provide a global standard for cellular data advancements.

What it means for consumers, AT&T says, is that they'll be able to download more data faster if they have compatible smartphones.

AT&T is the second major telecommunications giant to provide 4G LTE service in Albany. Last October, Verizon launched its 4G LTE service in the Albany metro area, providing faster download speeds to its customers.

You get what you pay for with cell service.

In terms of quality of service, you can't beat VZW. There may be some regional carriers who pick and choose small areas to have exceptional service, but on a national level VZW is número uno.

Everyone has their own story about an experience with their carrier, but JD Power and consumer reports aren't wrong. VZW doesn't offer cheap service, nor do they have any plans to do so.

You can't beat Verizon's national coverage.

It's funny how AT&T has been advertising for a while that they have the biggest 4G network when in fact their 4G LTE network is self-admittedly years behind VZW's. They love to play off people's ignorance of tech terminology. Not all 4G is created equal. 4G LTE > 4G

I hope that the "big two" will revise their data offerings to include more than 2GB of data for $29.99. 4G LTE is much more efficient than 3G so there is no need to rake consumers over the coals. To hell with that shared everything crap. I don't want or need unlimited calling for a personal phone in order to share data.
