Multimodal site selection forum set

ALBANY, Ga. — The city of Albany’s Transit System will hold an open community forum Tuesday to solicit public input on the site selection for the proposed Albany Multimodal Transit facility.

Albany officials will listen to public comments as they try to determine which of four proposed sites will best serve as the city’s multimodal transit location. Those sites include the former China Palace Restaurant, the current transit/Trailways Bus Station and the location of the former Heritage House Hotel, all on Oglethorpe Boulevard.

The fourth site is the former Carmike Cinema location on Slappey Boulevard.

The hearing, which will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., will be held in Room 120 of the downtown Government Center at 222 Pine Ave.

They should hold one hearing during the day and another at night to accomodate all citizens. 4p.m. to 6 p.m. really?!!!!

I wouldn't be surprised if they chose the old China Palace restaurant. Perhaps that was their hidden agenda in not allowing Big Daddy's lounge to maintain their license. I am not just saying this because I think this will happen, but rather another commentor made that comment a couple of weeks ago, and it is certainly a possibility.

Bad idea to put it at the old Carmike Theater. That neighborhood behind it would be in an uproar and who could blame them.

Number one choice is the Destiny property since Capitol City Bank is holding a lot of their "paper" and holds the security deed on the property. Would also facilitate John Hayes/Orlando Rambo's dream (in the Herald a few month ago) of revitalizing Harlem business district. Also would make the riders who don't like change from present faility happy, the most vocal group. Expect the property cost as well as the renovations to be very high.
Second choice is likely the Heritage House property which is already cleared and owned. Seems a shame to use for this purpose, however. But there is enough land and a "clean slate" to work with if new construction is planned.

The other two pieces of property are merely mentioned to make folks think there was a actually a decision making process that considered alternatives..
