The Plexiglas bottom panel held against the concrete brick. No matter. The burglar smashed the brick through the plain glass upper panel, allowing the duo to leap into the store about 1:55 a.m. Sunday.
The Fast Lane store at 3000 Sylvester Road was hit at least two times in the last two months, said Dougherty County Police Department Sgt. Chad Kirkpatrick.
“They spent 24 seconds in the store,” Kirkpatrick said. “They stole several cartons of Newport cigarettes. Nothing else.”
Watching the surveillance video, Kirkpatrick said it was easy to spot one burglar dressed in a light-color jacket with a burgundy hood enter the scene from the upper right coroner of the screen.
The burglar meets his brick-throwing partner in front of the glass front door and panel. Once the brick hits the panel, the burglar in the red hoodie and black Adidas athletic shorts leaps head first through the hole.
The other burglar, wearing a tan backpack, jumps onto the panel and through the hole. The red-hoodie burglar leaves by lying across the panel brace on his back and falls into the shards of broken glass on the outside.
The second burglar hurdles out and runs away. Red-hoodie picks up dropped cigarette cartons into his arms and takes off. At the end of the video, at the far end of the parking lot, he drops cartons and starts picking them up.
“The guy in the red hoodie had something like a turtle neck pulled up over half his face, with a black skullcap, white sox and white basketball sneakers,” Kirkpatrick said. “The other one you can see his whole face. He had a blue ball cap with a red bill on it.”
Convenience store burglaries have no real pattern, Kirkpatrick said. It can be a couple months and no convenience store burglaries, then several. Judging from incident reports, the Albany Police Department also has its share of convenience store burglaries among the more than 1,400 burglaries it reported last year.
