U.S. President Barack Obama speaks in the State Dining Room of the White House in Washington, January 24, 2013.
WASHINGTON —President Barack Obama will announce in his State of the Union address on Tuesday that 34,000 troops will return from Afghanistan by early 2014, a source familiar with the speech told Reuters.
"The president will announce that 34,000 troops will be back from Afghanistan a year from tonight," the source said on condition of anonymity.
Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai last month agreed to speed the handover of combat operations in Afghanistan to Afghan forces.
There are about 66,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Washington's NATO allies have been steadily reducing their troop numbers despite doubts about the ability of Afghan forces to shoulder full responsibility for security. (

Why not bring them home now?

I agree VSU. I have never understood why there is a drawdown timeline involved. The military could leave in a matter of days if they wanted too. There is always a fiasco with anything that Obama does.

The democrats cry about Bush's war and the cost and lost lives etc. Yet they remain there in Afghanistan for still another year. I guess since Obama is president the dems are okay with it.

"The last man to die for a bad idea..." If we stay for one more year or ten more, when we leave it all goes back to tribal warfare. If we haven't gone into Viet Nam it would have gone to the commies. All those years, all that money, all those lives. And it still went to the commies. It will be the same way in Iraq and Afghanistan. We can't change people, just kill them. Fewer boots, more drones.

Interesting that Viet Nam has moved away from communism and is embracing free enterprise, education and cultural esteem not tribalism or Marxism.
