WASHINGTON -- The Marine Corps Times reports that Col. Terry V. Williams, former commander of Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany, has been nominated for appointment to the rank of brigadier general.

Williams was one of 12 colonels to be nominated by President Obama for the one-star rank. The nominations were announced by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Monday, the Marine Corps Times reported earlier this week.

The colonel was not available for a phone interview with The Albany Herald on Thursday, but issued the following statement through MCLB-Albany:

"The first thing I want to do is thank God for all the wonderful people that have been and are a part of my life - all the great Marines, Civilian-Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Airman and civilians; senior, peer and especially junior - for, and with whom I have had the awesome pleasure of working throughout my career. And quite frankly, I can honestly say a lot of people in Albany were a part of this selection.

"It is such an honor to be selected to become a general officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. I am humbled by the faith and trust the Corps has placed in me. This is a responsibility that I do not take lightly, and I will endeavor to continue to represent the Marine Corps with the utmost transparency and boldness. I fully appreciate the opportunity to serve.

"Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank my wife and the love of my life, B.J., as well as the rest of my family and friends for their unending support. None of this would be possible without the full support of family and great friends."

Williams is currently serving as the executive assistant to deputy commandant for installations and logistics at Headquarters Marine Corps in Washington, D.C.

Prior to that, he served as the commanding officer for MCLB from June 2009 to May 2012 before being relieved by Col. Donald Davis.

A graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles, Williams was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Corps in 1986 before attending the Basic School the following year.

He was promoted to colonel in January 2008, after which he was assigned to the Headquarters Marine Corps Installations and Logistics Department. There, he served as the operations officer for the facilities and services division until coming into his position in Albany.

Yes, congratulations to Col. Williams. I had dealings with him once and he is a fine man and is truly deserving of this promotion. My husband (a crusty old retiree) was very impressed with the way he handled himself the day we met. So OORAH (must be Marine talk) to Col. Williams and I wish for you much success with your military future, both active and retired.

The promotion couldn't have gone to a finer man. Col. Williams is an excellent man of God and an example to the Marine Corps.
