Squawk of the Day - Feb. 16, 2013

"Thank you Carlton Fletcher for Wednesday’s column. I asked my three teenage sons to read your editorial and made sure they understood that it is the struggle or lack thereof that matters in one’s life but not the color of one’s skin. I thank you for putting this into such an eloquent editorial. Keep on writing."

I, for one sort of noticed a unique similarity between the piece and a certain movie about a High School Football Team. Anyone else notice that?

Well, yes I did notice a similarity. And I also noticed a similarity to my experience growing up in South Georgia and probably to thousands of others who developed a consciousness about the inequities in our culture and particularly for those of us whe grew up poor. We lived lives so close to the baseline of reality which we could not intellectually/emotionally defend ourselves against, fortunately. Many didn't do the sports thing to be awakened but it happened in other ways. I like the theme of the writer's piece. It gets a bit smarmy but sometimes subjectivity just engulfs us.

Sorry, I've never really cared much for reading fiction.
