DAWSON -- Joan Marie McCranie Collier, 76, of Dawson passed away on Friday, February 22, 2013 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center in Americus. A visitation was held at Harvey Funeral Home on Sunday, February 24, 2013 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. Funeral services were held on Monday, February 25, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Dawson. Dr. Wyman Richardson was the officiant. Pallbearers included Clayton Childs, Ross Collier, Charles Ray Sheffield, Rodney Locke, Brad Stafford and T. Gamble.

Joan was born January 9, 1937 in Eastman, Georgia and grew up in Eastman. She was the daughter of Emily Moon McCranie and Edward Lamar McCranie.

Joan graduated from Eastman High School in 1954. She attended Wesleyan College, the University of Georgia, and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B.S. Degree in Education. She later received a Specialist Degree in Library Science from Georgia Southwestern College.

She began teaching school in Preston and taught many years in Dawson and Albany. She also served as a librarian at Deerfield-Windsor School in Albany.

Joan was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dawson.

Preceding Joan in death were here parents and her brother, David McCranie and step-mother, Mildred Stephens McCranie. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, James M. Collier of Dawson; a daughter, Cindy Higdon and her husband, Larry of Cairo; sons, James M. "Bud" Collier, Jr. and his wife, Jan of Birmingham, Alabama, and Ed Collier and his wife, Beth of Dawson; nine grandchildren, Emily Brinkley and her husband, Paul, Betsy Childs, Clay Childs, James M. Collier III, Ross Collier, Hannah Collier, Marli Collier, MaryJohn Collier and Baker Collier; great-granddaughter, Charlotte Brinkley; brothers, Randy McCranie (Lynn) of Gainesville, Georgia, Steve McCranie (Corma) of St. Augustine, Florida, Bo McCranie (Jan) of Woodstock, Dan McCranie (Andrea) of Eastman; sister-in-law, Bernie McCranie of Athens; and cousins, Jane Pinkston (Bob) and Jim Horne (Len).
