WATERBURY, Conn. — The police chief in a Connecticut city has halted permits for gun shows, saying he's concerned any firearms purchased there might one day be used in a mass shooting.

The Republican-American reports that Waterbury Police Superintendent Michael Gugliotti imposed a moratorium the day after the Dec. 14 killings of 20 children and six educators at a grade school not far away in Newtown.

He says he's concerned a gun used in a future mass shooting could be traced to a purchase made at a show in Waterbury.

Westchester Collectors Inc. had planned a firearm and knife show for Jan. 12 and 13. Show organizer Newman B. Chittenden says canceling the gun show will not improve security.

He says that vendors will turn away people who have mental health problems and that they use common sense when evaluating whether to sell.

You would like to think this was a valid concern, but a Police Chief knows the so called loophole actually referrs to individual sales taking place, not Dealer transactions which must comply with both Federal and State law. Individual transactions are not governed by those laws. The Gun Show just seems to be a gathering place for guns for sale by individuals, many simply hoping to trade with a Dealer and then being approached by an individual desiring to purchase the firearm. Deal with the real problem, if it actually is one. The people knowingly stalking these Gun Shows with the intent of resale on the illegal market. They are just one step up from a straw purchaser. Most of these sales are perfectly legitimate. The seller gets more than the Dealer offered. and the buyer pays less than the Dealer would mark the weapon up to. I believe this is a Political move, and nothiong else!

I would think the odds of another mass shooting in Conn. would be slim. If anybody was planning a mass shooting they probably already have their weapon and he more than likely didn't get it from a gun show anyway. Maybe someone wanted to purchase a gun to help prevent a mass shooting. This is just paranoia.

It is sad that the Police Chief can "halt" a permit for a gun show in the first place.

All because of the actions of 1 crazy white boy...... I went to about 4 stores yesterday trying to find ammunition for a .40.......It seemed like the whole city was sold out.... Seems like everybody is stocking up before weapons are banned.......
