Model Railroad Club set for show and sale

ALBANY, Ga. — Members of the Flint River Model Railroad Club are working up a head of steam for their 22nd annual Model Train Show and Sale Jan. 19-20. According to Jimmie Swann, club treasurer, hobbyists will have an opportunity to view or purchase train paraphernalia from a number of vendors as well as to rub elbows with enthusiasts from outside clubs.

“There are clubs like ours in Tallahassee, Dothan, Americus and Macon,” Swann said. “A lot of those guys will be there, and probably from Atlanta, too.”

Swann has been active in model train systems for more than 25 years, he said, and has been a conductor on the SAM Shortline Excursion Train running between Cordele and Americus.

According to club president David Godwin, model railroading is a fascinating hobby which can quickly branch into other areas and sharpen supporting skills.

“As you’re involved in this, you start to improve at a lot of other things,” Godwin said, “like electronics and carpentry. Railroading goes a long way toward sharpening your problem-solving skills.”

For those who have an interest but not a lot of expertise, Godwin said there will be plenty of vendors and skilled club members on hand to answer questions on laying track, building bench work, detailing and building models or locating specific resources.

Godwin said financial investment for railroad newcomers doesn’t have to be great. Engines, cars and track, as well as buildings, animals and other environment may be enhanced gradually. Even the digital command control systems (DCC) which gives lends greater control to sound and lights and even permits separate control of multiple engines, can begin with a simple system.

The show and sale is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 19 and 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Jan. 20 at Knights of Columbus Hall, 2009 Gillionville Road.
