Fight prompts lockdown at Albany High

ALBANY, Ga. — Dougherty County School officials say that a Monday morning fight that triggered a lockdown at Albany High School was near school grounds and could be seen from the school.

School system police asked for Albany Police Department assistance in breaking up a fight that reportedly involved multiple people.

DCSS Public Information Director R.D. Harter said he was not sure if the fight reached the school's campus. Early reports say the brawl began near Lipsey Drive, about a block away from the school.

APD spokeswoman Phyllis Whitley-Banks issued the following statement Monday: "The altercation that occurred this morning at approximately 8:39 a.m. took place in the back parking lot on the campus of Albany High School. By the time APD officers arrived, no one was at the scene and school police took over. Any further information will have to be obtained from the Dougherty County School Police Department."

Get your facts straight. Monroe High is on Lipsey Drive. Albany HIgh is on Residence.

But Lipsey Drive is a block away from Albany High School, which is where the fight is alleged to have happened. Our information is correct.

Monroe is on Lippett Drive

"Why can't we all just get along?"

Rodney claimed to be interested but others don't seem to be and the effort died with him!

WALB says it was eight outsiders beating up on one student. Good security they have at that school if eight outsiders could just walk on campus and proceed to attack a Student. Anyone else see a problem here? Time for the old school yard fence and single student entry turnstiles requiring ID. Same with gated entry for Buses. Plus monitor the single entry points. That way the school exits to the outside are still there in case of fire escape.

Walt, the fight happened off campus, according to folks at the DCSS.

1

chinaberry25 1 year, 3 months ago

They have all of that Walt. Fences, locked doors, but the campus is so spread out and a lot of those kids walk to school. They usually have to wait outside until breakfast at 8:00, so they wonder around.

Must be one bada$$ student for it to take 8 wannbees to beat him up.

If only teachers were armed they could have killed those 8 outsiders and this crisis would have been averted.

VSU 1 year, 3 months ago

Or they could ban fists and feet since they were probably used.

The world might be a better place. Who's to say?

waltspecht 1 year, 3 months ago

Had it involved weapons, maybe you would be right. Police are just minutes away while you have seconds to react.

Good point Sherwood. There is hope for you.

I would like to contribute on this but I am still thinking about those 20 children slaughtered by that terrorist with the mass murder weapons. I just can't make any humour out of it.

We must "laugh to keep from crying" as my Mamma used to say when we think of how Democrats and Liberals have used the tragedy in Connecticut to attempt to force "Gun Control" on all of us law-abiding citizens, using the little dead children as nothing more than political pawns to achieve their twisted vision of America's Future. Everybody please read Ray Bradbury's book "Farenheit 451" and let's see what their future looks like for our children and grandchildren.

The way I see it, those Gun Control Liberals would trample up and down over the children's bloody bodies with their signs and screams of "Gun Control!!" if they would have been admitted to the scene of the crime. I'm making it graphic because that's how strongly revulsive I feel when I hear the Gun Control lobby rhetoric because I KNOW that no laws will make America safer from gun violence and they are using the tragic circumstances ONLY to advance their political might and POV and Control over us all.

Didn't you folks see that the fight is happening a block away from the school? This is a city problem not a school administration problem.

LOL. They never let facts get in the way of a chance for a dig.

This is what is wrong with the media. WALB reports its at Albany High and now it is reported it happened one block away. If the media would get ALL of their facts straight before shooting a headline with one or two sentences and incorrect info. It would be nice to get a correct report the first time 'round!!!!

dingleberry 1 year, 3 months ago

Media feeds on media and when one is wrong all will likely be wrong at some point.

We reported the story first and that the fight happened off-campus on Lipsey Drive. We can't control what WALB posts. I would suggest you contact their general manager, Jim Wilcox, at jim.wilcox@walb.com if you have a complaint or their news director, Dawn Hobby, at dawn.hobby@walb.com.

The Herald and WALB are two separate and distinct organizations.

Thanks for clarification on relationship of the organizations, JD. Sometimes it is hard to tell.

Monroe is on Lippitt Dr. They got the street name right.

What a retarded reaction. Why stop there? Why not lock down the entire school system? Call in the National Guard.

It's sad to look at what we have become.

mrcvsjr 1 year, 3 months ago

@Chinaberry 25: Monroe is on Lippit Drive not Lipsey.

J.D., I can tell you that The Herald's reporting is much more accurate than WALB without a doubt!!!

Eight people attacking one individual. Were any students or DCSS people envolved?

Have you noticed how rapidly Albany is heading towards a jungle society? What on earth can reverse the trend? Where is the leadership? Have all the leaders moved away?

1

VSU 1 year, 3 months ago

The leadership is pretty much why Albany is in the position it's in.

whistle !! Flag on the Play! Didn't you hear Colon Powell listing all the Forbidden Words that can't be used when describing Black People in your sentences? Words such as "shucking and jiving" and "lazy" CANNOT be used in the same sentence when describing a specific Black person (expecially the Royal President) or Black Persons in general. Additional words that CANNOT be used in this context are "monkey", "makakka", and many many others that somewhere along the line got BANNED in certain contexts. Some people even ban the word "they" even though it is pretty much a general pronoun that gets used one quadrillion times per day but now they's been conditions added to its use. End of English lesson.

Except to note that your use of the word "jungle" is racist and inappropriate in this context. Please repent before the Herald bans you and Carlton Fletcher labels you a "racist". Fair warning.

Okay, before we all put down Generation Y & Z, I am 37, I Graduated a New Jersey High School in 1994. I had & saw terrible fights happen. I am not saying this in light, but " One Person Fought One Person , in a circle. No Weapons, Fight was over, all parties left ". People today have 10 against one. so, in that aspect, there is no more one to one ratio, and no more fighting with just fists. Weapons are used now. I admire the kids today, they are smart, in a world gone mad, no one gives them a chance to prove themselves. There was more chances of positive thought when I was younger ( Generation X ). The only answer in to put Police or Military in our schools. Simple Answer. Military type enter / exit into the buildings. Last chance to education & a calm simple work day. These are different times now, sad, but these kids deserve an education, Also, uniforms are a great idea. no fighting over who has the best Nike(tm) sneakers. All dress shoes. Just my 2 cents. Society in downfall, Drastic moves are needed. Peace

Your recommendations are too smart and too simple. Instead, what the Liberal geniuses running the country will do is punish everybody else BUT the criminals, meanwhile accomplishing absolutely NOTHING to stop future mass murders.

I see where my two comments pointing out grammatical errors in the story and headline weren't allowed to be published but the corrections were made. At least you're paying attention to the comments.
