ALBANY -- Melvin Leon McKendrick was born on June 8, 1939 in Lee County, to the late Reverend Silas and Phyllis Cherry McKendrick. He was the second of six children born to this union. His parents and one sister, Eddie (Edie) Maude Davis preceded him in death. He departed this life on January 12, 2013.
He accepted Christ at an early age and joined the St. John Baptist Church and was baptized by Rev. Haynes. He attended the Lee County Schools and graduated from Lee County Training School in Leesburg, Georgia. After graduation, he began to seek more fertile ground for employment and he moved to Hartford, CT. He appreciated life's simple pleasures. Melvin loved his family and listening to baseball and football on the radio. He could quote sport statistical history dating back to the fifties. While in Hartford, Melvin attended church at the Mount Calvary Baptist church where reverend F. D. Oats was the pastor.
Melvin was employed and retired from Finast Foods Warehouse. After retirement he later relocated to Atlanta, Georgia and resided at the Big Bethel Village Adult Residence until his death. At Big Bethel Village, he loved the life offered to mature adults.
Melvin is survived by his daughter Tonya (Marvin) Curry, Hartford, CT; son Dr. Leonard b. McKendrick, Chicago, IL; two sisters, Bettye Burch, Atlanta, GA and Willa McKendrick, Brooklyn, NY; two brothers, Silas McKendrick, Albany, GA and Winfred L. (Bettye) McKendrick, Miami Gardens FL; three grandsons, Christopher, Devon, and Marvin Curry, all of Hartford CT; one uncle, Wilfred McDavid, Detroit, MI;
one aunt, Lonnie M. Lewis, Philadelphia, PA; three nephews, Reverend W. Chad (Tamara) McKendrick, Lake Mary, FL, Bryan Green, Orlando FL, and Stephan Eric Burch, Brooklyn, NY; three nieces, Dr. Wachelle McKendrick, Avarian McKendrick, both of Tallahassee, FL and Tajava (Jose) Crespo of Brooklyn, NY; and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
