Terrell museum hosts quilt show

DAWSON, Ga. -- A widely known quilt appraiser will speak in Dawson this evening to kick off a weekend of activities that includes the lecture and a quilt show on Saturday and Sunday.

Speaking at 6:30 p.m. will be Teddy Pruett. Sponsored by the Terrell County Historical Museum, the lecture will be conducted at Dawson United Methodist Church. Tickets are $5.

After tonight's lecture, those attending will have an opportunity to preview the quilt show at the old Carnegie Library building on Main Street in Dawson.

The quilt show will open at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Carnegie building's ground floor and will continue through 4 p.m. The show continues Sunday from 1 p.m-4 p.m. No admission is charged for the quilt show.

Pruett will be available during the show on Saturday to do appraisals of quilts only. Fees range from $20 for a verbal appraisal to $40 for a written appraisal.

She has studied quilt and textile history for more than 20 years. Pruett said various factors influence the value of a quilt, including dye processes, fabric printing methods, patterns, construction techniques, regional variations, market values and others.

"Quilts sometimes tell stories of their own," Pruett said. "They actually speak to people; the silliness or sadness in the heart of the maker has been transferred to them just as powerfully as if it had been the written word. All this from a few fragments of old cloth."
