ALBANY, Ga. — A woman motorisrt died after losing control of a Buick Regal and smashing into a guard rail on the southbound side of Liberty Expressway just before the Blaylock Street exit about 4 p.m. Saturday, authorities confirmed.

Albany Fire Department firefighters put out an engine fire as other firefighters cut open the passenger side door, reached in and cut the seat belt off the driver, said Ron Rowe, deputy fire chief. EMS responders did what they could, but the driver was reported dead on arrival.

No information was immediately available from the Georgia State Patrol handling the case about the identity of the woman or the reason for the crash. Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler drew blood at the scene, a standard procedure.

Albany Police Department officers handled traffic control closing entrances to the expressway and directing southbound traffic approaching the crash site to the northbound lanes. By 5:45 p.m. a wrecker had towed the car, firefighters cleared the roadway of debris and the road was reopened to traffic.

I am so glad that Michael Fowler is on the job for this tragic accident. God help you, Mr. Fowler, in performing your duties.

It is scary over at the exit where Jefferson is.....cars merging on while you try to merge off.......its a poor design,,,,,

You pretty much have to work with other motorists to get on or off that ramp, but some motorists are rude and uncourteous and cut in front of you instead of safely merging in behind you getting off the expressway.

To which GDOT is making changes.. Saw dozens for "men in yellow vests" there earlier in the week walking and talking with their clipboards.. Maybe they are finally going to get the design right..
