SATURDAY'S PREP HOOPS ROUNDUP: Like boys, Deerfield girls easily handle rival Sherwood, 55-37

ALBANY — Nyla Perry scored 13 points to lead the Lady Knights to a 55-37 win Saturday at Sherwood.

Sherwood (7-10) trailed 10-5 after the first quarter but stormed back in the second quarter to take a 26-20 halftime lead and put away the Lady Eagles (8-9) in the second half.

Samantha James and Kelsey King added 10 and eight points for Deerfield, respectively, while Madison Walker (13 points) and Markeria Lewis (9) led Sherwood.

The Lady Knights play again Tuesday at Brookwood, and Sherwood is in action Tuesday at Terrell Academy.

NORTHSIDE COLUMBUS BOYS 73, LEE COUNTY 55: One night after knocking off Herald No. 3 Bainbridge, the Trojans ran out of gas Saturday at Northside, Columbus.

Aaron May led the way with 23 points and 12 rebounds, and Jaysyn Brown chipped in 13 points, but it wasn’t enough for Lee County, which lost starting guard Reggie Breedlove in the third quarter to a bruised tailbone.

Lee County (8-10 overall, 2-2 Region 1-AAAAA) plays again Friday at Thomas County Central.

NORTHSIDE COLUMBUS GIRLS 52, LEE COUNTY 36: Kayla Cooper scored 16 and Ashley Morris added six for the Lady Trojans, who fell to 3-11 overall and 1-3 in the region.

MILLER COUNTY GIRLS 74, STEWART COUNTY 45: With two defenders blanketing her all night, Miller County star Mallory Diamond was still able to drop in 41 points in Saturday’s 29-point win.

The junior guard also added seven points and seven assists, while Tykeria Holmes finished with 12 points and 20 rebounds and Asia Goss had 11 points and 14 rebounds.

The Lady Pirates, who are now 4-11 overall, play again Tuesday at Early County.

PELHAM GIRLS 55, CAIRO 34: Four Lady Hornets scored in double figures Saturday to lift Herald No. 3 Pelham to its fourth straight win.

Briunna Williams and Quanvanique Franklin led the way with 12 points apiece, while Hillary Williams and Timbreana Hudson each scored 10 and McKenzie Smith added nine.

Pelham started slow but outscored Cairo 16-7 in the second quarter to take a nine-point lead into halftime and never look back. The Lady Hornets (15-3) play again Tuesday at Baker County.

MITCHELL SWEEPS ALBANY: The Herald No. 5 Eagles upset No. 4 Albany High, 65-50, and the Lady Eagles routed the Squaws, 70-34, Saturday night for a clean-sweep for Mitchell County.

The Mitchell boys (16-3) got a game-high 17 points from Bruce Bryant and 11 points from Jaquan Williams, while the Lady Eagles (11-7) were led by Miya Barnes (13 points, 15 rebounds), A’Miracle Jones (13 points) and Tashara Burns (11).

Malik Dungee-Ali (15) and Tyler Cheese (10) scored in double figures for the Albany boys, while Nakita Gervin scored 10 to lead the Albany girls.

BAINBRIDGE BOYS 62, HARDAWAY: The Herald No. 3 Bearcats bounced back from Friday’s stunning loss to Lee County with a win against Hardaway to improve to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the region.

Tyree Crump scored a team-high 16 points for Bainbridge, while Justin Baker and Steven Johnson scored 12 and Dontavius Marshall added 11.

The Bearcats play again Tuesday at Thomas County Central.

BAKER GIRLS 59, SCHLEY 46: Cierra Hawkins (18 points, 5 rebounds), Aneesiah Owens (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Brittany Ware (15 points) led the Lady Bears to their first region win Saturday.

Baker, which improved to 4-12 overall and 1-8 in Region 1-A, play again Tuesday at Pelham.
