TAMPA, FL -- Clark Hughes Dowdell, 91 of Valrico, FL, passed away on January 21, 2013. He was born on June 12, 1921, in Wimauma, FL. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gladys Barnett Dowdell, his son James A. Dowdell, his daughter Susan B. Smith and her husband Ronald O. Smith, his granddaughters, Lane A. Dowdell and Taylor D. Murray and her husband William Jason Murray, and a grandson, William P. Smith. He was preceded in death by a son William C. Dowdell. He had been a resident of Albany, GA, since 1954.
Clark graduated from Plant High School in Tampa in 1939. He served in WWII as a flight instructor with the United States Army Air Force at Turner Field Army Air Force Base in Albany, GA, and was also a Staff Pilot at Wright Patterson Army Air Force Base, Dayton Ohio. He graduated from the University of Florida in the Class 1943. He was a Brother at Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He retired in 1982, from the Army Corps of Engineers, where he had been Project Manager for the West Point Dam Project, LaGrange, GA. He also managed several other major projects in Georgia and South Carolina. He was a Member and had been a Deacon at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Albany, GA.
Funeral services are planned for January 28, 2013, at 11:00 AM, in Albany, GA, graveside, at Oakview Cemetery.
