Squawk of the Day - Jan. 24, 2013

"Why won’t people quit lying about seeing food stamps sold? Actual food stamps were phased out years ago. The new program sends out money by EBT — Electronic Benefit Transfer. They are accessed by cards similar to the ones other people use, but only for food."

Why won't people quit lying about not being able to work, get off their butt, and be productive citizens. Quit being a leech on society. I know this is not always the case but it sure seems that way around Albany.

Sixty you must have gone to school in Albany if you don't know how they sell food stamps or let other people use card. Your mistake you should have dropped out & learned from the street people on how to use the system.lol

Did not go to school in Albany. lol.

1

AuntieDee 1 year, 2 months ago

I went to Albany schools. How to sell Food stamps were never mentioned in my class.

1

MRKIA 1 year, 2 months ago

MOST OF THE EBT USERS AROUND HERE DIDN'T GO TO SCHOOL.

That's what I have been seeing the cards used for buying candy, crackers and small cakes to stock small inhome stores. Lady admitted it and so did the checkout clerk. I was told to mind my own business by the welfare fraud. We need to go back to the commodity stores for surplus products and phase all of this free stuff out.

Get the tag number of the BMW, Fryar, and make that call!! Do it now!!

When we go back to the commodity stores the cheese, peanut butter, powdered milk, etc, that isn't traded or sold is going to make fine feed for the hogs. Back in the 80's when I was working in rural home health there were some finely fed porcine specimens who got the commodities that the folks refused to eat and were unable to sell or trade.

1

MRKIA 1 year, 2 months ago

YOU DON'T NEED A FOOD STAMP TO TURN THE BENEFIT INTO CASH. GO TO STORES IN OR NEAR THE HOOD AND THE USE OF AN EBT CARD CAN BE PURCHASED FOR AROUND 50-75 CENTS ON THE DOLLAR. I'VE WITNESSED AND BEEN OFFERED THIS DEAL MANY TIMES. THIS IS OLD NEWS.

1

dickyboy 1 year, 2 months ago

Hey agirl I had a lady come in my office years back and tried to sell a big slab of cheese for 10 bucks... also know of a person who bought $200 worth of food stamps for $100 so she could pay utility bill... gave person her pin # so she could use card..

3

agirl_25 1 year, 2 months ago

Yup.....when I worked in rural health I used to get offered stuff all the time at rock bottom prices. I would smile and make up some excuse about why I couldn't eat it. I did have one young patient tho, who used her food stamps/commodities wisely. She was a joy to have as a patient. So not all were/are bad.

2

MRKIA 1 year, 2 months ago

SAY WHAT YOU WANT BUT THAT GOVERNMENT CHEESE IS GOOD STUFF. USED TO COME IN A CARD BOARD BOX. WISH I COULD BUY SOME.

2

rightasrain 1 year, 2 months ago

They will always find a way to scam the system; it's in their genes.

0

chinaberry25 1 year, 2 months ago

Just words. The end result is the same thing. A millionaire could go do and lie and get food stamps. Obama cut all the verifications out of income out, so the unethical folks without a conscience hit DFACS in droves. They do turn down some honest people, but if you lie you are in. I was behind a young woman who bought a buggy full of food yesterday at Walmart. Among that she had a package of chicken and a package of ground beef. She also had stacks of pizza, corn dogs cases of bottled drinks about 5, junk food and a jar of spaghetti sauce. Michelle, where are you? Not one can of veggies or fruit.

2

FlunkyMonkey 1 year, 2 months ago

Michelle was busy shoveling food into her mouth like an underfed football player....

Just yesterday I was in line behind a woman who purchased a Honeybun and a Pepsi with her EBT card. The system that allows that is broken.

1

AuntieDee 1 year, 2 months ago

Last I heard, honeybuns and pepsi are still considered food. So, why shouldn't that be purchased with a food stamp card? What do you suggest they be able to purchase?

1

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 2 months ago

Oh I don't know....something healthy maybe? Alls I know is, Michelle O'bama would not approve of the pepsi honeybun combo.

1

VSU 1 year, 2 months ago

What do you suggest they be able to purchase? Maybe the bare necessities. I don't think honey buns and pepsi is a necessity.

1

MRKIA 1 year, 2 months ago

IMPULSE PURCHASES IN CONVENIENCE STORES SHOULD BE ELIMINATED. LET THEM PAY FOR THAT WITH THEIR OWN MONEY.

0

FlunkyMonkey 1 year, 2 months ago

Fruits, vegetables, raw meat (that way they HAVE to cook), pastas, breads, grains (like rice). etc. The last time I checked the nutritional value of honey buns and pepsi were minuscule at best...definitely not nutritious food for growing children. I am going to assume there were children involved since the person used an EBT card.

0

RedEric 1 year, 2 months ago

That woman had the wrong clas EBT card. The good ones are cash cards. That is where all the complaints about them being used in casinos and strip clubs come from. They are debit cards. Then if you get another identity, you double your income. If you borrowyour neighbors kids to add to your own you get a pay raise. That is why fraud in welfare programs is estimated to be near 50%. You can't go to church and ask forgiveness for the same lying and cheating(stealing) every Sunday. So, you go to a church where lying and stealing is not considered a sin.

0

waltspecht 1 year, 2 months ago

The way food stamps, EBT cards are currently sold, is the individual doing the selling buys what the one doing the paying wants. Then they load it into the Payees car and money exchanges hands. Unfortunately this practice is easy to observe in many Grocery store parking lots. Usually the sale is for good meats. However I have seen what looks like a Reataurant purchases. Six dozen eggs, eight packs of bacon and twelve loafs of bread just don't seem like a normal EBT purchase. However, the good Fryer is right. The folks that should be checking don't really seem to care. As to commodities, I have known many people that didn't share it with their hogs, I guess they just weren't as spoiled as the folks you observed.

0

fcarroll 1 year, 2 months ago

Some EBT cards will let you have cash back, purchase gas also, i have seen the notice at the gas pumps at Walmart. That the card i want, i should be able to get one, after all i worked since i was 14, but thats right, it's the non working class that qualifies for those. Some of us older citizens need the EBT to actually purchase the small amt issued to buy their mthly suppy of dried peas, beans, etc

0

VSU 1 year, 2 months ago

Yep, has a sign saying "We accept EBT cards".

0

AuntieDee 1 year, 2 months ago

The sign you see at Walmart gas pumps do not say you can purchase gas. It just says your card may be used here. People with logical reasoning abilities know the sign means that the card maybe used for food items.

1

MRKIA 1 year, 2 months ago

THAT'S TRUE. SOME PEOPLE YOU HAVE TO TELL.

0

FlunkyMonkey 1 year, 2 months ago

Why won't this squawker get their head out of the sand? It does not matter what you call it, people are selling these damned things or getting cash money off the cards and that is called FRAUD----

2

bubbasmithredneck 1 year, 2 months ago

who cares??? EBT...,Food Stamps, free food, .....Repubs are just mad because they arent getting any.......hahahahaha......

1

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 2 months ago

yeah, repubs are the ones paying for it.......

1

AuntieDee 1 year, 2 months ago

Anyone who pay taxes pays for free benefits. I'm a democrat and I play plenty of taxes.

2

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 2 months ago

Unless you make over $50 grand per year, you don't pay much federal income tax.

0

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 2 months ago

I believe in a previous post she stated that she makes 65K per year.

0

VSU 1 year, 2 months ago

People like bubbasmith wouldn't care, they are not the ones paying for it.

I am proud of the fact I can take care of myself and be a sucessful person and earning my own keep. I would be embarrassed and ashamed to have to rely on the government and EBT cards to survive. Outside of people who are elderly and/or disabled or simply fallen on hard times there is one word to describe those who live (or should I say steal) off the system and that word is LOSER.

MRKIA 1 year, 2 months ago

THERES NO SUCH THING AS FREE FOOD.

0

FryarTuk 1 year, 2 months ago

I still contend the best way to manage hand-outs is to stop it all together. If we are going to to do it make food available only through commodity surplus stores. Children and old folks only. My wife worked for DFACS as a social worker in the early 1970's in Atlanta and was assigned the old Perry Homes (housing project). She saw commodities on the tables everywhere in the poorest, most crime infested section of Atlanta. Cans of peanut butter, almonds, cheese, processed meats and fruits. The food also went to schools, YDC's, and approved child care institutions. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Put the food in the hands of people. Keep the Wal-Marts and like out of the food line. The EBT was an invention of Public Law 100-435, the Hunger Prevention Act of 1988 and was signed into law September 19, 1988. Guess who signed it? It should be replaced.

Cartman 1 year, 2 months ago

Just cut it off. The government does not have the obligation to feed the population. We are making things worse by handing out money.

2

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 2 months ago

"When you pay people to be poor, you will have a lot more of them"

4

Cartman 1 year, 2 months ago

Next thing you know, they'll be neglecting their kids and letting trash pile up in their houses.

2

dickyboy 1 year, 2 months ago

If you cut out entitlements.. you better live in a fortress with armed guards.. crime will soar.. these people are going to get there money from somewhere.. and not legally.. entitlements are like the protection rackets run by the mafia..you cut it off and all hell will break loose

0

Cartman 1 year, 2 months ago

They're doing it anyways. But we are just making it worse by continuing to fund it. At some point it is unsustainable. Then when the food, water or gasoline stops; your scenario hits the fan anyways.

2

FlunkyMonkey 1 year, 2 months ago

Crime is soaring now in Albany---try another reason not to cut off entitlements.

1

trudy2 1 year, 2 months ago

Dickyboy, please do not include the Mafia in any thing related to Albant, Ga. as you make yourself less credible that those posting here.

Can someone explain to me how for centuries white people leeched off of the stolen labor of the African and African American work force, undeveloped this labor force by making it illegal for them to read, created a mock sharecropping system, developed the peonage system precursor to today's prison industrial complex, and on and on.

Albany, we need a lesson in the social and moral history of root causes of the social problems facing us today. Then, and only then, can we even scratch the surface to try and recover as a city, region, state and nation.

If some of you had the same generational histories as many of the people you criticize, I wonder how different the outcomes would be. I think maybe not all that different.

Lord, make us instruments of Your peace. Where we hate, let us sow love; where we injure, let is pardon; where we doubt, let us have faith; where we speak despair, let us speak hope; when we bring darkness, let us bring light; when be cause sadness, let us cause joy.

0

Sister_Ruby 1 year, 2 months ago

Lord, give those among us with half a brain, at least one coherent thought each day. Amen.

0

revolutionnow 1 year, 2 months ago

As long as we point to others for solutions to our problems instead of ourselves, nothing will change. Or do you propose to " leech off of the stolen labor" of the AMERICAN taxpayer for " centuries" ?
