ATLANTA — A man who was once one of the state's top lawmakers stood before a judge Friday morning after authorities say he tried to pass through a security checkpoint with a handgun in his briefcase.

WSB-TV reports that former Georgia House Speaker Terry Coleman was charged after TSA workers discovered a .22 pistol in his briefcase as he was passing through security.

Coleman spent more than 30 years in the Georgia House and was elected speaker in 2003.

If convicted, he faces up to a $10,000 fine.

The Atlanta airport leads the nation in gun confiscations. Wonder why?

Idiots, thats why. Its not like this started after 9/11. You haven't been able to carry guns on planes for decades.

The TSA should be defunded. The cure is worse than the disease.

That was just a plain STUPID move on the Speakers part, he should have known better and to think these are the people that get elected by the people. I say let him pay the fine the same as if it were me that got caught !!

He will have the same excuse everyone else has, I forgot it was in there. It is probably true, but it also speaks to an individual that shouldn't have a gun in the first place. Maybe if it can't be traced to him, he will say someone put it in there to get him in trouble?

Terry Coleman is a good person and will tell the judge the truth. It will turn out to be he just forgot due to his being so use to having it. Sis, I'll bet it happens to you too, you just get so comfortable having your six shooter next to you it's just like it's part of you. Coleman is an okay guy. You'll see.
