Former Georgia speaker arrested after carrying gun into Atlanta’s airport

ATLANTA &#8212 A man who was once one of the state’s top lawmakers stood before a judge Friday morning after authorities say he tried to pass through a security checkpoint with a handgun in his briefcase.

WSB-TV reports that former Georgia House Speaker Terry Coleman was charged after TSA workers discovered a .22 pistol in his briefcase as he was passing through security.

Coleman spent more than 30 years in the Georgia House and was elected speaker in 2003.

If convicted, he faces up to a $10,000 fine.
