Robert Olin Giddens

ALBANY -- Mr. Robert Olin Giddens, 86 of 1803 Whispering Pines Rd. in Albany died at his home on Friday, January 25, 2013.

Funeral services will be Today, Tuesday, January 29, 2013 11:00 AM at Byne Memorial Baptist Church. Dr. Matthew Nance and Rev. Charlie Brown Officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Bob was born in Miami, FL, and lived in Worth Co., from 1927 to 1934, when his family moved to Albany. He was the son of the late Idus R. Giddens and Mattie Kathleen Brim Giddens. The youngest of 5 boys, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Rupert, Wilton, Frank and Weyman and his nephew Jan Giddens. All of the 5 brothers served our country in the military during World War II, Bob in the Navy as an aviation fire fighter from 1943 to 1946. After 30 years as purchasing manager for the Dougherty County School System, he retired to enjoy his passion for gardening, wood carving, fishing, baseball and his practice of teasing his family.

A longtime member of Byne Memorial Baptist Church, Bob loved the Lord, his family, friends and the Church. He was a faithful member of the Open Door Sunday School class. He played softball in the church league for the Byne "Reds" for many years and was extremely proud of the time he played with his son when Tom became old enough to play. He also enjoyed taking family and friends to Vogel State Park for vacation.

Bob had a deep respect for education and placed high regard for the teaching profession. He was especially pleased that his children and grandchildren went to college. Linda, Casey, and for a while Tom, were all teachers and had his highest praise.

Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Frances Gatlin Giddens, Albany; daughter, Linda Giddens Darrah (Marshall), Hamilton, GA; son, Thomas Robert Giddens (Carol), Kennesaw, GA; three granddaughters, Mary Quinn Roper, Columbus, GA; Casey Taylor Giddens, Destin, FL; Kelly Paige Giddens, Tuscaloosa, AL; and one great-grandson, Dakota Quinn Roper, Columbus, GA

The family received friends on Monday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Kimbrell-Stern.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Byne Memorial Baptist Church, 2832 Ledo Rd., Albany, GA 31707.
