Roommate shot after unexpected arrival

ALBANY, Ga. — Seeing what he told Albany police he thought was an intruder, 28-year-old Jimmy Jones Jr. grabbed his .40-caliber handgun and fired at least two shots hitting an intruder in the elbow about 1:55 a.m. Wednesday, according to police reports.

The man he shot, however, was his roommate, 27-year-old Gene Anthony, who was unexpectedly returning to the 1563 Georgia Ave. residence, said Phyllis Banks, Albany Police Department spokeswoman.

“He (Jones) spotted a dark figure moving through the door,” Banks said. “He thought it was a burglar.”

Anthony was taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, where a hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday he remained in critical condition.

Banks said that the case remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.
