WARWICK -- Mr. John H. Merritt, Jr., 81, passed away Thursday January 31, 2013 at his home in Warwick.

The funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday February 2, 2013 at Banks Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow in the Poulan Cemetery with Rev. Rick Hamilton and Rev. Matt Greene officiating.

Mr. Merritt was born on September 13, 1931 in Albany to the late John Haygood and Mary Ione Bowers Merritt. He married Mary Ann Smith Merritt on December 23, 1959. Mr. Merritt served in the National Guard, worked at the Worth County Courthouse in the Maintenance Department, was a Volunteer Fireman and Police Officer. He retired from Miller Brewing Company in 1993 and from the Worth County in January 2013 as the building inspector. Mr. Merritt was a former council member and Mayor with the City of Poulan. He was a charter member of the Poulan Lions Club for 35 years and a member of the Warwick Lions Club for 10 years. Mr. Merritt was a member of the Poulan United Methodist Church for 70 years and the Warwick United Methodist Church from 2003 until present.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Smith Merritt of Warwick; sons, John H. Merritt, III (Valarie) of Poulan, Hugh James Merritt, Sr. (Jerri) of Poulan; grandchildren, T. J. Shiver, John Haygood Merritt, IV, James Merritt, Jr., Jason Merritt and Mackenzie Merritt; nephew, John Roberson and a niece Mary Roberson.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Banks Funeral Home.
