Marine sergeant killed in motorcycle crash

ALBANY, Ga. -- A man who died following a Sunday-morning crash has been identified as a Marine stationed at Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany.

Albany Police Department officials say that Sgt. Ronald Nabors Jr., 26, was killed when he struck the passenger side of an 18-wheeler near the intersection of Cordele Road and Clark Avenue just after 11 a.m.

Nabors was traveling north on Cordele Road on a motorcycle when he struck the truck as it was traveling south on Cordele and making a left turn into the Pilot service station, APD spokeswoman Phyllis Banks said.

Both Banks and officials at MCLB-Albany confirmed that Nabors was an active Marine sergeant stationed at the base. He was taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

Colie Young, the base's public affairs officer, said Nabors' family was properly notified Sunday evening. Due to a 24-hour policy following the notification of next of kin, Young said that base officials would be unable to say anything regarding the accident until late Monday.

The driver of the truck has been identified by police as Grant Lee Cannon, 27. No charges had been filed as of Monday in connection with the crash, Banks said.

Nabors was a member of the Marine Corps Logistics Command Maintenance Assistance Team. He served in Afghanistan from Dec. 2009 – April 2010 and reported for duty at MCLC on Oct. 28, 2011. His decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terror Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the NATO – International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation – Navy, two Good Conduct Medals, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, a Certificate of Appreciation, Meritorious Mast and three Letters of Appreciation.
