One killed, another charged in crash with street sweeper

ALBANY, Ga. —One person is dead and another injured after an early-morning collision with a city street sweeper on the Liberty Expressway.

Albany Police Department officials say around 3 o’clock Wednesday morning, Amber Marie Kelly Brown, 23, of Snellville, struck the rear of a city street sweeper that was parked in the emergency lane of the Liberty Expressway, then crossed the median and struck a guardrail.

A passenger in the vehicle, Damian Antoine Johnson, 28, also of the Atlanta area, died at the scene.

Brown, who is a student at Albany State University, is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. She’s been charged with DUI less safe, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, driving on an expired license, DUI refusal and a seat belt violation.

An APD spokesperson said Brown refused to submit to alcohol testing at the scene of the crash.

Rain is not believed to have been a factor in the crash, and investigators say they believe Brown was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
