Charles E. Peterson

ALBANY -- Charles E. Peterson of Leesburg, GA passed away Monday, July 8th, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be Thursday 10 AM at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Dr. William (Biff) Coker officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery with American Legion Honors.

The fourth child of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Peterson, Charles was born and raised near Blakely, GA. After graduation, Charles headed to the University of Georgia where he began his career in education. During this time, however, Charles joined the United States Army where he served as an infantryman in the Mekong Delta. Charles, upon returning to the states, went back to Athens where he finished his degree and began teaching. A life-long learner and a lover of the University of Georgia, Charles would return to Athens twice to receive two additional degrees eventually earning a six-year specialist degree in Education. Charles retired from Albany Technical College in 1999.

Throughout his career and into his retirement, Charles led a life of quiet service towards others. A 1997 recipient of the Georgia Outstanding Citizen Award, Charles was recognized by the Secretary of State for his personal commitment to service. From organizing a Christmas party for children suffering from HIV to sharing his love of math with students at Covenant Presbyterian's Whiz Kids program, service towards others was truly a theme woven throughout Peterson's life. Charles was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Sine Nomine Sunday school class.

Mr. Peterson was preceded in death by his parents, James Daniel Peterson and Eunice Williamson Peterson and his sister, Peggy Henry.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Faye Peterson of Leesburg, GA, daughter, Amy Savelle Bartilotti and her husband Richard of Richmond, VA, sons, Joshua Burnette Savelle and his wife Angela of Albany and John Downing Savelle and his wife Ivy of Albany, grandchildren, Shelby Augusta Bartilotti, Matthew Bentley Bartilotti, Bentley Gray Savelle and Collier McDaniel Savelle, brother, Henry Peterson and his wife Joan of Colquitt, GA and a sister, Jessie Mabel McGriff of Blakely, GA.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Kimbrell-Stern.
