ALBANY, Ga. — Rico Jones was convicted late last week in connection to the death of his 3-year-old stepdaughter in December 2010.
Jones’ trial had been ongoing in relation to his role in the death of Camyria Arnold. Dougherty District Attorney Greg Edwards said Monday that, after four hours of deliberations, the jury handed down a verdict at 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Jones was convicted of felony murder, five counts of cruelty to children and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. While the sentencing date has yet to be set, the minimum he now faces is a life sentence, Edwards said.
The child was taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital by Jones after she had been acting sluggish and breathing heavily. She reportedly had bruises and red marks on her body, dilated pupils and signs indicative of a possible drowning. She was eventually sent to the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, where she died on Dec. 27, 2010.
