LOCAL GOLF: Grand Island in early lead at Challenge Cup

LESSBURG — Captained by Rod Murray, the team from Grand Island leads the annual Challenge Cup following the first round after posting a score of 327 on Saturday at this year’s designated course, Grand Island.

Grand Island, which is also the defending Cup champ, got 61s from Murray and Nate Gahman, while Tyler Hansen, and James Stroup posted 62s and Gammie Patten and Bubba Kerice shot 67s.

Doublegate, captained by Glen Harrell, is in second place with a score of 342, followed by Stonebridge (349, captained by Rob Allen)) and River Pointe (366, captained by Sonny Skinner).

“We’re trying our best to return the cup to Grand Island,” Murray said. “The course is in great shape and it’s been a great event at Grand Island, so we hope it turns out in our favor.”

The Challenge Cup, which continues at 8 a.m. today, is an annual two-day tournament held between the local golf clubs’ top players.
