OUTDOORS: Weekly fishing reports

Lake Seminole — Bass fishing is good and fish are active despite the heat and stained water. Early morning and late-afternoon topwater fishing is productive. Best baits are frog-type lures fished in surface vegetation. Jerkbaits may also pay off. Deep grassy areas near river ledges are good spots to target after complete sunup. Texas or Carolina-rigged softbaits are good here. Crappie fishing is slow. Hybrids are fair late in the afternoon on crankbaits and spoons fished over humps and off-the-channel sandbars. Bream fishing is slow and catfish are fairly active deep over hard bottoms.

Flint River — Bass fishing is not as hot as it should be this time of year, when the shoal bass should turn on and begin to maul topwater baits fished in the rocky shallows. Stained water is likely a factor. Largemouths are slow at present. Bream fishing is fair in some spots. Fish the banks and bends with crickets and red wigglers. Catfish are slow overall, but there are reports that the flatheads have picked back up over the past few days. Channel cats continue to bite sparingly.

Lake Walter F. George — Bass fishing is fair in shallow grass. Early morning topwater fishing is best with flipping becoming productive later in the day. Also fish the channel ledges with deep-running crankbaits and Carolina-rigs. Shallow brush fished with Texas rigs is also a productive technique. Crappies are fair on deep creek ledges and can be caught on jigging spoons just off the main river channel. Night fishing is a good option. Hybrids are inconsistent at present. Bream are slow. Catfish are good, especially at night.

Lake Blackshear — Some fair bass catches are possible along the ledges. Look for the best bite around 12 to 15 feet and expect the best results on Carolina-rigs and slow-rolled spinnerbaits. Stay with the largest spinnerbaits when slow-rolling along the ledges. Catfishing remains pretty good in the afternoon around the cypress trees and also around docks. Crappies are still slow, but the individual fish taken lately are fairly large. Bream are slow and the few fish being taken are small. A few stripers are surfacing late
