Radio operators ready to ham it up

ALBANY, Ga. — The Albany Amateur Radio Club will be taking to airwaves June 22 at the lake at Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany, organizers say.

Annually on the fourth Saturday of June, U.S. and Canadian amateur radio operators set up portable systems and antennas for “Field Day.” The event gets started in the morning and by 2 p.m., hams, as the operators are known, attempt to see how many stations they can contact in the United States and Canada. The hams restrict themselves to non-commercial power and low radio power, as might be the case in an emergency. Albany club members say they will power their radios with car batteries and use simple wire antennas.

Those who want to watch should go to MCLB-Albany’s main gate on Fleming Road, present driver’s license and any other requested documentation, and ask to visit the radio club operation.
