ASHBURN, Ga. -- One woman is dead and two others are injured following a shooting that took place at Ashburn Inn late Sunday.
The Ashburn Police Department responded to the hotel at 1971 North St. and discovered multiple gunshot victims, one of them deceased, law enforcement officials said Monday.
The deceased was identified in a news release Monday by the Ashburn Police Department as Marilyn Patterson, 41, of Ashburn.
Another victim suffered a through-and-through gunshot wound to the leg and has been treated and released from the hospital. The third victim underwent emergency surgery and was in guarded but stable condition Monday afternoon, police said.
Joshua McKelvin, 33, remained in custody on Monday afternoon with felony charges pending in connection to the shooting, officers said. McKelvin was taken into custody after being checked by medical personnel.
He is known to authorities in both Georgia and Florida, Ashburn police officials say.
Police say statements from the scene indicate that an argument ensued between the deceased and the gunman. Patterson was believed to have in the motel room with the assailant when she was shot, police said. The suspect then exited the hotel firing randomly into the crowd, striking the other two victims, officers said.
Investigators remained on scene during the night, and evidence continued to be recovered by officers, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, into Monday as they combed the area near the hotel. The Turner County Sheriff's Office, the Dooly County Sheriff's Office, the Sycamore Police Department and the GBI office in Perry were among the agencies that have been assisting in the investigation.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Ashburn police at (229) 567-2323.
