ALBANY, Ga. — Georgia beef producers are again celebrating June as beef month in Georgia, and several Dougherty County beef producers are among those participating.
“Beef cattle are raised in every county in the state of Georgia, and contribute to the economy of our county,” said Dougherty County Farm Bureau President Laney Wooten.
According to the 2011 Farm Gate Value Report compiled by the University of Georgia Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development, there are about 3,200 head of beef cattle in Dougherty County.
As of Jan. 1, Georgia had about 1.02 million head of beef cattle according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The 2011 report showed the value of all beef cattle in Georgia to be $409 million, making it the state’s sixth largest cash commodity.
