CLASSES/SEMINARS

CAREGIVER CLASSES

Powerful Tools for Caregivers: The SOWEGA Council on Aging is coordinating “Powerful Tools for Caregivers,” a six-week course designed for caregivers or individuals anticipating becoming a caregiver. This class will empower caregivers and teach tips and strategies for dealing with the problems and issues that come along with caregiving. Individuals will benefit from this class whether caring for a family member or friend in the home or in another facility. Classes are free but reservations are required.

A caregiver is someone who cares for a parent, spouse, friend or relative, and provides assistance with “activities of daily living,” such as helping someone to eat, bath, dress, transport and toileting. Other activities you may assist with are housework, balancing a check book, and assisting with doctor appointments. Being a caregiver can be overwhelming at times. This class will provide a “box of tools” for managing self-care. Each class will teach effective approaches on:

— Taking care of yourself;

— Reducing personal stress;

— Changing negative self-talk;

— Communicating your feelings and needs to others;

— Setting limits and asking for help.

Attendees will receive a Caregiver Help book that addresses specific caregiver issues. For more information or to register, contact: Family Caregiver Program (229) 432-1124.
