Man gets house arrest in mother's death

ALBANY, Ga. -- Robert Hooks was sentenced Friday in Doughrty Superior Court to two years under house arrest in connection with the death of his 84-year-old mother, Jewel Hooks, court officials said.

Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards said Hooks earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter, avoiding the original charge of felony murder and greater associated penalties.

Edwards said Hooks was accused of failure to provide basic medical care and sometimes even food and water for his mother.

"At Mrs. Hooks' death, the pathologist said she died of chronic neglect," Edwards said.
