GSW Capitan Plaza to be dedicated March 27

AMERICUS, Ga. — Capitan Plaza, named for William H. Capitan, the eighth president of Georgia Southwestern State University, is scheduled to be dedicated in a ceremony at 11 a.m. March 27 at the university plaza.

Capitan and Wife wife, Dolores, are scheduled to attend the ceremony at the plaza, located between Buildings 1 and II of the Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex. He served as president of GSW from 1979 until 1995.

During Capitan’s tenure, the university added bachelor degrees in fine arts, computer information systems, computer science and computer science technology, and an expanded bachelor in business administration. Construction during the time included the fine arts building, Deriso Pool, education center and Westbrook Bell Tower, and the GSW Foundation and Rosalynn Carter Institute were established. The Dolores Capitan Writing Award is given each year to nonfiction writers who are students at GSW.

Capitan Plaza will include a commemorative bronze plaque, benches, and trees and flowers planted specifically for the area.
