PREP ROUNDUP: Lee County baseball wins first game

TIFTON — Brent Kyzar nailed down the first win of the season for Lee County's Trojans when he struck out the final batter of the night with the bases loaded Tuesday at Tift County, where Lee hung on to win 3-1.

"Brent was really sharp,'' Lee County coach Rob Williams said. "He would just not give in.''

Kyzar held Tift County to three hits and did not allow an earned run to improve to 1-1. He struck out six and walked two.

Andrew Stroud led off the fourth with a solo homer and had two hits to lead the way for Lee County, which scored twice in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie. Nick Bruner singled and went to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on Jack Bell's double. Bell scored later on Chris Mosley's sacrifice fly.

The Trojans (1-5) will be at home at 7 p.m. Friday to face Hardaway in a Region 1-AAAAA game.

WORTH COUNTY 5, DOUGHERTY 3: Eli Reddell struck out 15 Trojans and also went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI to lead Worth County on Tuesday.

WESTOVER 8, CAIRO 3: The Patriots opened Region 1-AAAA play with an 8-3 win Tuesday against Cairo.

Kel Miller and T.J. Cromer --- who led the Patriots to the Elite 8 in basketball earlier this month --- shined on the diamond as well.

Miller was the winning pitcher, tossing five innings and striking out six. He was also 2-for-5 with a double at the plate.

Cromer hit a 3-run homer in the fourth inning that sparked a six-run rally to give the Patriots a 7-2 lead.

Also for Westover, Josh Black was 3-for-5 with a triple and Jay Cunningham was 3-for-3.

Westover (2-4, 1-0) plays again Thursday at Paul Eames Stadium against Mitchell County.


DWS, Americus baseball teams win

ALBANY -- Dougherty (1-1) was led by Kelvin Milner, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Demetrious Reed, who went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Milner pitched seven innings and gave up five runs on eight hits while striking out five.

ALBANY — Austin Murphy went the distance to improve to 2-0, allowing just one run on three hits to lead Deerfield to a 5-1 win against Terrell Academy. He struck out four and walked two.

Kh’Ron McClain went 3-for-3 and scored three runs for DWS. Harris Webb, Davis Hines and Westin King each went 2-for-4 for the Knights, who improved to 3-2. Jay Brunswick went 2-for-3 and scored Terrell’s only run.

DWS will host Stratford at 7 p.m. on Friday.

AMERICUS-SUMTER BASEBALL 9, ALBANY HIGH 3: Carlton Wallace, Breon Robinson and Durell Roberts each went 1-for-3 for Albany High and Malik Mathis (1-1) gave up seven runs while striking out six and walking two. He also hit four batsmen in the loss. Albany High is now 3-2 for the season and 1-1 in Region 1-AAAA. No information was avalible for Americus-Sumter.

Albany High plays Westover at 5 p.m. Friday at Paul Eames.

WESTOVER GIRLS SOCCER 10, ALBANY HIGH 0: The Westover Lady Patriots stayed unbeaten in Region 1-AAAA with the one-sided romp on Tuesday.

Katie Brown scored five goals to lead Westover (7-1 overall and 6-0 in the region). Jasmine Young and Nelliena Young scored two goals each, and Abi Estrada scored a goal. Westover travels to Cairo for a 5:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.

WESTOVER BOYS SOCCER 8, ALBANY HIGH 2: Tanner Stumpe scored three goals and Hunter Choi scored twice to lead the Patriots, who are 5-3-1 overall and 5-1 in Region 1-AAAA. Alfred Nwankwo, Kevin Vincent and Aubry Smith also scored for Westover, which plays at Cairo on Tuesday. No information was available for Albany High.

DWS GOLF WINS: The Deerfield boys golf team opened its season Tuesday with a 322-352 win against Westfield at Houston Lake Country Club.

John Leach shot a 77 and was the medalist to lead the Knights. Other DWS scores were Wilson Joiner 79, Ethan Shellhaas 82 and Bill Sharpe 84.

The Knights play again Tuesday in Tifton.
