LOCAL COLLEGE/PREP ROUNDUP: Deerfield tennis smashes Southland, moves to 11-0; GSW golf in 10th after first day of Bobcat Invitational

ALBANY — Following a clean sweep over the weekend at the Deerfield Tennis Classic — the Knights and Lady Knights beat Westfield, Westwood and Southland — DWS returned to the court Monday and routed Southland again. The DWS boys won, 4-1, and the girls rolled, 5-0, as both teams improved to 11-0 on the season.

Nasser Risvi (No. 1 singles) and Tyler Lowe (No. 3) won their matches, while Southland’s Alex Arnold picked up the Raiders’ only point at No. 2 singles when he beat Ben Hoopes.

In doubles, the team of Robert Newsome/Red Wright won at No. 1, while Pete Langstaff/Will Calhoun won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2.

On the girls side, Tyson Joiner (No. 1), Caroline Holley (No. 2) and Gabby Pinnero (No. 3) all won easily, while DWS’ No. 1 doubles duo of Amy Rao and Katernia Mathes and No. 2 doubles team of Paige Hawke and Ansley Arrington won their matches to complete the sweep.


EATONTON --- The Georgia Southwestern men's golf team shot a 2-round 587 on Monday at the 17-team Bobcat Invitational to finish the day in 10th place.

Nate Gahman, a former Lee County star and Herald Player of the Year, led the Hurricanes as the senior carded rounds of 71 and 72 for a three-over 143 and currently sits tied for 14th.

J.P. Griffin carded a seven-over 147 and is tied for 30th overall. Andrew Ritchot finshed the day tied for 40th with scores of 75 and 73.

Seventh-ranked Lynn University leads the field with a five-over 565 after the first two rounds.

Armstrong's Gus Wagoner leads the individual side with a five-under 135.
