Chehaw rides reopen Saturday

ALBANY, Ga. — Two of Chehaw Park's most popular attractions are set to reopen Saturday for the 2013 season.

The African Veldt experience, which debuted last year on Labor Day, is a new ride that transports zoo visitors into the wilds of Africa. The 47-acre habitat is home to zebras, ostriches, wildebeests, eland antelopes and impalas. Visitors are transported in a tractor-pulled covered trailer that affords closeup views of the animals in natural settings. The ride costs $3 (in addition to regular zoo admission) and will run on weekends and holidays every hour on the half-hour.

The other Chehaw ride experience, which will also run on weekends and holidays, is the Wiregrass Express train. This attraction has been chugging through the woods at Chehaw for more than 20 years. It also is $3 per person.

Chehaw, located north of Albany off Philema Road at 105 Chehaw Park Road, is open daily 8 a.m.-7 p.m. The wild animal habitat is open 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Combo park and zoo passes are $5.75, ages 4-12 years and military; $8.75, ages 13-61 years; $7.75, ages 62 and older; free, children under 4.
