Dougherty students win at 4-H District

ALBANY, Ga. — The Dougherty County Extension Office traveled with several 4-H youths to Colquitt for the 2013 4-H Southwest District Cloverleaf Project Achievement.

The awards were based on 5th- and 6th-graders’ abilities in public speaking, creativity and record keeping. Twelve youths from Dougherty County placed in the competition.

“I am very excited and proud of how well the 4-Hers performed at District Project Achievement,” said Randy West, Dougherty County 4-H agent with the UGA Department of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. “Project Achievement can be challenging and kind of scary for the younger 4-Hers.”

Dougherty County youths participating in this year’s Cloverleaf Project Achievement were:

Myles Byrom placing 1st in Paleontology; Ariel Edwards placing 1st in Food Safety and Preservation; Keaton Summerell placing 1st in Outdoor Survival Skills; Morgan Rhodes placing 2nd in Public Speaking; Vernorya Tinch placing 2nd in General Science; Drew Cribbs placing 3rd in Companion Animal Science; Daniel Davenport placing 3rd in Food for Fitness; Shykeme High placing 3rd in Performing Arts Vocal; Trayvon Jackson placing 3rd in Bicycle; Jazma Lewis placing 3rd in History; Charity Sanders placing 3rd in Performing Arts General; Chloe Theidel placing 3rd in Cat Care; Dianah Anderson competed in Performing Arts Vocal; Katelyn Cosby competed in Dog Care and Training; Jada Hewell competed in History. West and Jessica Dorsey, Dougherty County 4-H program assistant, also attended the trip with the 4-Hers.

Pasaquan reopens for 2013 visitors

BUENA VISTA, Ga. — Southwest Georgia’s famous art site Pasaquan reopens to the public on April 6. The site will be open on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through November.

The creator of Pasaquan is Eddie Owens. The complex consists of six buildings, all interconnected by a series of painted masonry walls, colorful concrete sculptures, and an assortment of landscape elements.

Cameras and picnic baskets are welcome. Admission is $5 per person. Children 6 and under are free.
