LEESBURG, Ga. — The Lee County Board of Education unanimously approved Phase I exterior renovations to Lee County Middle School East at a called meeting on Tuesday.

The board voted 4-0 to award the $642,856 cost limitation project to Kinney Construction. Phase I will deal with the school’s athletic fields and includes site preparation, playing fields and a well.

According to LCSS Superintendent Larry Walters, the District is operating under a tight deadline, when the opening of the new Lee County Elementary School will herald rezoning with students and teachers being moved at the elementary at middle school levels.

“The teachers and students have been reassigned,” he said. “We will begin the work next month, now we just have to get all that work done before the new school year begins.”

Phase II of the project will involve work to the building’s interior. The $1.4 million project is expected to go before the board for approval at the April 15 board meeting.

The bulk of Phase II modifications at Lee Middle School East will involve restroom modifications and locker room renovations.

Walters added that if any money is left over after Phase I and II are complete, it will likely go toward building a pressbox/concession facility at the school.
