LOCAL COLLEGE/PREP ROUNDUP: GSW golf finishes third in Bobcat Invitational

VALDOSTA — Former Lee County star Nate Gahman and teammate J.P. Griffin paced the No. 17 nationally ranked GSW men’s golf team to a third-place finish in the 17-team Bobcat Invitational on Tuesday.

Griffin tied for third overall, while Gahman was seventh. GSW shot a final-round 1-over, 289.

“Conditions were tough both days — temperatures in the 50s and wins in the 30 mph range — but I think we toughed it out and had a good showing,” GSW coach Darcy Donaldson said. “It helped us gain ground in the regional rankings for sure.”

GSW is currently No. 7 regionally. The Hurricanes’ next tournament is this weekend in Miami at the Barry Invitational.

VSU ENDS ASU SOFTBALL’S WIN STREAK: The Albany State softball team saw its nine-game winning streak snapped Tuesday after Valdosta State swept the Lady Rams, 11-3 and 9-0.

The Lady Blazers broke open a 2-2 tie in the opener by scoring nine straight runs, and then scored a pair of runs in the third inning of the second game on a Courtney Albritton home run — her 15th of the season, the second most in the country — before scoring seven runs in the fourth inning to pull away.

Albany State fell to 20-14 and plays again today at Rollins College.

Albany High baseball run-rules Monroe, 12-2

ALBANY — The Albany High baseball team took care of region and overall bitter rival Monroe, 12-2, in five innings Tuesday.

Vashon Gaines got it done on the mound and at the plate. Gaines struck out one and allowed five hits, while going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Malik Mathis finished 1-for-4 with a double and four RBI for the Indians, who improved to 4-4 overall and are now 2-3 in region.

Albany’s Derrell Roberts added a 4-for-4 day, Andrico Carter was also 4-for-4 with four RBI and Carlton Wiley was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Albany next gets set for a test against Region top dog Crisp County on Friday in Cordele.

WESTOVER GIRLS SOCCER 11, AMERICUS-SUMTER 0: The Lady Patriots (9-2, 8-2) rolled Tuesday behind a combined shutout from Hope Johnson and Delaney Burnette and goals from Jasmine Young (2), Katie Brown (3), Amie Loudermilk (2) and one each from Abbey Estrada, Natalie Young and Tan Young, while Deanna Miller had two assists.

Westover next travels to Dougherty on Thursday.

TERRELL ACADEMY BASEBALL 7. SGA 3: Josh Brunswick (7 IP, 6Hs, 3Ks) picked up the win and also was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Dalton Dedge finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for Terrell (5-3, 2-0), which also got a nice game from Clint Smith (two RBI).

SGA was led by Will Warren’s two hits, while Jake Odom had an RBI.

Region No. 1 Terrell next faces Valwood on the road Thursday.

SHERWOOD GIRLS, BOYS SPLIT WITH VALWOOD: The Sherwood girls soccer team improved to 12-2-1overall and 3-1 in region with a win Tuesday against Valwood, 2-0. Aubri Hughes scored boh goals and Hannah Thompson pitched the shutout.

The SCA boys lost, 2-0. Both teams will return to action at home Thursday against Tiftarea.

DWS SOCCER SWEEPS: The Lady Knights beat Calvary Christian, 13-1, behind two goals each by Maggie Greene, Rachel Sullivan and Carlton Yarbrough and one each from Jordan Lane, McKenzie Hudson, Collins Chandler, Parker Morgan, Cheyenne Colvin, Casey Kincheloe, Kendall Freeman.

The DWS boys (5-2, 2-1) got three goals each from Andrew Sullivan and Lanier Freeman and one from Carson Orlowski. DWS next plays at Tiftarea on Friday.

LEE COUNTY GIRLS 4, COLQUIT COUNTY 0: Carsen Taylor’s hat trick led the Lady Trojans to an easy, shutout victory Tuesday.

Lee County, which improved to 6-4 overall, also got a goal from Josie Nix.

The Lady Trojans play again Friday at home against Region 1-AAAAA rival Harris County.
