Georgia girl killed in backyard mauling by dogs

ATLANTA -- A toddler died in south Georgia after being mauled by a pack of seven dogs in her backyard, police said on Thursday.

The girl's grandmother and others were unable to stop the attack late on Wednesday before the child was killed by the pack of pit bulls, according to the Savannah Morning News newspaper.

In an interview with Reuters, Bryan County Sheriff's Detective Donnie Thomas confirmed the attack but gave few other details. He said the child would have turned 2 in June.

Bryan County Deputy Coroner Tommy Flanders declined to comment on Thursday.

The dogs were euthanized by the Bryan County Animal Control, the newspaper reported.

Along with wreckless pet owners!

There is more to this story. And any dog can attack. I was attacked by a peconeise (misspelled) when I was a child and did nothing to provoke it. So sad this happened, but it is not always dogs fault.

Is Pekingese the breed of dog you are looking for?

These dogs are banned here in Ontario. Allowing a 2 year old access to this pack of animals is reckless endangerment plain and simple, dog lover or not. The dog may be mans best friend but man must recognize the nature of the beast. A little girl paid supremely to bring us this lesson, we can honor her by learning it.

This is sad that a young child's life is cut short by a pack of dogs. Any dog can attack at any given time is true, but it seems 95% of the stories you see or read in the news about dog attacks involves Pit bulls. The owners of these dogs (If there are any owners) should be arrested for allowing these dogs to be running loose. My condolences to the family members of this young toddler.

I am eager to hear a follow up on this story. I would like to know how a community can allow a pack of dogs wander around without some notice to authorities. To say the least pet ownership will be an interesting discussion. It is also of interest as to how a toddler could be exposed to the risk of the attack, that is the proximity of supervision etc. Just an awful tragedy. Society seems to have a tolerance for incidents of savagery.

"in her backyard..."

They would have had to "wander around" before arriving in the little girl's backyard. If I see a pack of pits off leash or outside of a yard, I would call animal control or 911 ASAP. Surely someone saw these dogs wandering about.

Son of Hurd, you really have a tough time with language. Every time you write something it seems to be just switching feet. I hope you don't keep the prize egg at the Easter Egg Hunt. Remember, it's for the children not those that behave immaturely.

The girl's grandmother was unable to stop the attack because she was inside, asleep, while the 21 month old baby girl was in the back yard with 7 pit bulls.

Pitbulls are dangerous period. When the headlines say mauled you already know it was a pitbull.
